Bologna Buyer's Guide — Buy the House That Still Makes Here

Bologna's prestige is a vaulted walk and a famous kitchen. Reverse the order of the purchase. Establish who made the object, where it was finished, how long it keeps, and who will stand behind it before you let the portico or the house year deepen the sale. Buy the house that still makes here.

Pasta and the salumi counter

At Paolo Atti & Figli and Tamburini, buy one comparable format. Tortellini, a cooked piece, a cake. Make the staff translate it into use.

Ask who rolled or filled it, when it was made, how it should be cooked or stored, and which day it should be eaten. Atti's official site is blunt about capacity. When the kitchen is full, shipments stop. The January 2026 note on the homepage is the same rule in public: they closed intake because space and time were already spoken for, then reopened on a named date. Use that standard at the counter. Tamburini's official promise is freshness by shipping on suitable days. A tray that will not survive the train is a lunch, not a trophy. Do not buy more Certosino or mortadella than you can eat at its best.

The two doors sit on the same short street. Atti at Via Caprarie 7 and Via Drapperie 6. Tamburini at Via Caprarie 1. If a seller cannot say which shop packed the bag, you do not yet have a purchase.

Chocolate and coffee

At Majani, Via de' Carbonesi 5, choose one named object. The current site gives you Scorza, the Cremino Fiat of 1911, and the chocolate tortellino. Ask which of those is on the counter today, where that batch was made (the historic shop or the Crespellano factory at Via Brodolini 16), and how long the box should be kept. Heritage belongs to 1796. Freshness belongs to the piece in your hand. Official contacts list a Thursday morning and a Sunday close. Confirm before you walk.

At Caffè Terzi on Via Oberdan, describe the brew you actually use: moka, Napoletana, espresso, a machine at home. The house sells courses for those methods. Buy beans or a class that matches the equipment you already own. The legal company seat in San Pietro in Casale is not the café. The café is the Oberdan door.

Shoes, leather, cloth

For A.Testoni or Enzo Bonafè, the question is the method. Bolognese construction, hand-welting, where the shoe is made. Not whether the name sounds local. Testoni's official footer is Via Molino Rosso 9/C, Imola. Bonafè's official footer is Via Pollastri 4, and the site sends you to exclusive stockists in other cities. If you cannot name the shop that will fit and recraft the pair, you do not yet have a purchase.

Fiorentini + Baker is the exception you can walk into. Piazza Aldrovandi 1. Official contact says try before you buy. Ask leather, last, and whether the Eternity boot in your size is this season's make or a pair that has already been sitting. Lived-in is a finish. It is not an excuse for a bad last.

Furla is a Bologna house with a current door. Official store-detail puts the first street at Via Ugo Bassi 10. A second official door is Via Farini 7. Ask leather, lining, hardware and whether the shop will repair the bag. The official Ugo Bassi page lists riparazione as a service. "Founded here in 1927" does not describe the object.

At De Paz, Via Ugo Bassi 4/d, ask whether the piece is ready-to-wear or cut for you, which cloth is on the table, and what the house will alter. For Fray or Marol, the checkable facts are finish and collar. Hand-finishing, the Iseo one-piece collar, made-to-measure options. Fray's headquarters is Via Fanin 1, Casalecchio. Marol's atelier street is Via Gorizia 38, by appointment. A stockist must be able to name the maker.

The houses without a centro door

Magliano, La Perla, Roberto Collina, Piquadro, Macron, Mandarina Duck, Elisabetta Franchi and Daniele Alessandrini still belong to this map as houses. They do not, on present evidence, give you a centro salon you can treat as a flagship. Official streets exist (Castiglione 20 as a legal seat, Mattei 10, Morandi 256 in Crevalcore, Sassuriano 246 in Gaggio Montano, Pastore 57 in Valsamoggia, Tortona 27 in Milan, Viadagola 30 in Granarolo, Sciesa 2/A in Milan). None of those is a reason to buy a logo because you are standing under a portico. If you cannot name the object and the finishing place, walk on.

OMAS is the one workshop-belt maybe. Via del Fonditore 10 is the ORBIS-recorded door. Confirm it. Do not add it to a food morning on a hope.

The Bologna refusal rule

Walk away when the seller cannot say who made the object, when a founding year is offered instead of a door, when pasta or chocolate is sold past its best, or when a factory, museum or online cart is dressed as a shop. Ducati apparel on shop.ducati.com is not a Borgo Panigale boutique unless a shop is shown. The museum at Via Cavalieri Ducati 3 is a museum.

Walk away from the Ferrara cake, the Fermo boot, the Martina Franca ceremony suit, the Monsummano last, the Paduan sneaker, the Mira knit and the Mantova jacket when they are presented as Bologna identity. Their real streets lie elsewhere.

Emotion can start the purchase. The maker should finish it. Keep the invoice, the product name, the production place and any storage note in a form that will still make sense at home.
