Cairo Buyer’s Guide — Keep the Maker’s Place Attached

Cairo’s strongest shops connect a capital-city editor to makers elsewhere in Egypt. Do not ask only whether something is Egyptian. Ask who made it, in which community, what the Cairo house contributed and how the object should be used.

Textiles and embroidery

At ANŪT, distinguish Akhmim weaving from cooperative embroidery and Fayoum pottery. For cloth, record fibre, weave, dye, dimensions, shrinkage and washing. Turn embroidery over to inspect starts, ends and tension. Ask whether the design belongs to the artisan group, ANŪT or a collaboration.

At Nomad Gallery, apply the same discipline to Sinai Bedouin work and Akhmim textiles. Do not buy several regional traditions as a matching set; their differences are the point.

Rugs

At Kiliim, keep Fowa attached to the rug. Ask for fibre, dye, weave density, weaver or workshop, expected size variation and cleaning. Lay the piece flat, inspect both faces, edges, corners and fringe, and photograph the label.

Measure at home before choosing. A rug bought for colour but wrong in scale becomes expensive storage. Confirm international shipping, duties and return terms in writing.

Furniture and home objects

At Caravanserai, obtain material, finish, dimensions, lead time and delivery terms for any commissioned furniture. Test drawers, hinges, joints and surface. Ask which parts are made by the house’s team and which by specialist artisans.

At Cairopolitan, separate in-house candles and design/prototyping from pottery or metalwork made by outside workshops. A humorous Cairo reference should not distract from glaze, weight, print quality or function.

Multi-maker craft

At Fair Trade Egypt, ask for artisan group, governorate, material and the nature of the fair-trade relationship. At Nomad and ANŪT, ask comparable questions. Buy the object whose specific origin the seller can sustain, not the one accompanied by the longest general story.

What ruins the purchase is excess. A broad showroom can make six unrelated craft traditions look like one collection. Choose one or two categories and keep notes with each piece.

Books

At Diwan, bring a subject and ask for Arabic, English and translated routes into it. Check author, translator, publisher, edition and baggage weight. If a title is widely available, let it go in favour of the staff recommendation that gives the city’s contemporary argument more room.
