Doha Buyer's Guide — Buy Oud, Dates, and Local Design by Name

Doha sells objects that still have names, and objects that only have logos. Buy oud, dates, and local design by name. Do not buy the city as a mall photograph.

Ask what is in the jar

At Mamlakat Al Oud, Dragonmart on Barwa Commercial Avenue, say whether you want house oud, imported spray, bakhoor, or dehn al oud. Those are four products. A seller who answers with "original" has not answered. Smell, then buy a sealed pack you will use. Unit numbers stay held. Ask for the house by name inside the complex.

Black Oud is a Doha brand from 2019. The official site is still the order door. The parent now names the first floor of The Gate Mall on Al Shatt Street in West Bay. Order or walk for the bottle by the name on the label. The marble is not the juice.

WAJD Fragrances is three extraits, LAYL, SABAH, BARR, at 40 percent, sold at The Label in Place Vendôme on Street 347 and on Gewan Island. Smell all three. Buy one. Noor Perfume (Parfum Delelegance) is a 2017 Doha house whose published address is Office 9, Building 236, Dar al Salam. Write first.

In the gold lane of Souq Waqif, ask karat, weight, and the shop's name. 18k, 21k and 22k are not one word. A bridal set without a weight is a window. In the spice lanes, ask what is in the mix and whether it was blended here. A tin with no list is a souvenir. Glass, a textile, or a copper pot from a workshop beside the market is a better first object than a magnet. In Souq Waqif Antiques, pick up the thing. Ask what the label is attached to. A date without a place is atmosphere. Buy it only if you want the object, not the story.

Buy the packer and the cutter

Doha Dates packs Khalas, Ajwa, Medjool and Safawi at A'Sailiya and has done so since 1997. The pin is the Sailiya Central Market district on Street 1225, a factory neighbourhood, not a counter. Buy the variety, then syrup or chocolate-coated fruit if you need a gift that will survive the flight. Qinwan Dates sells Medjool as a luxury box. The official address is an eleventh-floor office in Al Salam Tower on the Corniche. Do not go there for fruit. Find a counter that will open a box.

TRZI in the Msheireb Design District cuts abayas with named patterns and will repair or recut. Moonlight Concept is Building U02, Msheireb Galleria, Sikkat Wadi Msheireb, a Qatari house since 2011. WADHA is at the National Museum of Qatar on Museum Park Street: a 2010 Doha house, cloth and cut you can see. WAAD Designs publishes a Festival City floor and an Ain Khalid studio at Zone 56, Street 640, Villa 182. Book the studio if the work is custom. Cellini Signature is Unit 11, Parcel 01, La Croisette, Porto Arabia, for a thobe treated as tailoring. Fanilla Couture is the first floor of Royal Plaza on Al Sadd Street.

Studio 7 on the ground floor of M7 is the room in which to ask who made the object. Gema By Arts & Gems at Building 503, Al Khail Street, is the jewellery version of that question: hers, or a guest designer. Opearl Qatar in the Westin lobby on Salwa Road will set a pearl you can name. Freshwater and saltwater are not the same stone. Ask which, and whether the setting is 18k or silver. Liwan Furniture at Tawar Mall F11-14 is the furniture version of a named commission. La Boutique Blanche publishes Showroom 2, Souq Al Raouwda, Salwa Road, Fereej Al Nasr. Go for a gown only if that is the errand. Lusso Moda cuts to measure and appears at The Label under Place Vendôme. Book it. Do not treat the mall counter as the house.

Coffee that was roasted here

Honoroast is inside Flat White at Tawar Mall Gate 3, Al Markhiya Street. Buy a single-origin bag. Doha Roastery has roasted since 2017 under Eisa Al Romaihi. The official About names no street. The house Linktree names Al Diyafa Hotel Suites on Al Qawafell Street in Al Sadd among other doors. Buy the bag at the branch you are standing in. Vulcan Coffee Roastery is in Ezdan Oasis, Al Wukair. Go for a Treasury lot, not for a city stroll. A bag you will brew is the purchase. A machine you will not ship is not.

Walk away

Walk away when the oud has no house name, when the date box has no variety, when the gold has no karat, when a Msheireb shop answers with a mood and no maker, and when Place Vendôme, Lagoona Mall or Ezdan Mall is asked to stand in for a house. Gucci Doha, Omega Boutique Doha and Galeries Lafayette Doha are address and pointer. They are not the errand. A bag from Florence or Switzerland is a bag from Florence or Switzerland.

Candeel names candles for Doha and Lusail. The last workshop door is Manarat Tower, first floor, 4th Street, Lusail Marina. Official pages still do not print it. Book before you walk.
