Turin Buyer's Guide: Buy What Still Melts and Pours

Turin's prestige is a gilded café and a bottle with a crest. Reverse the order of the purchase. Establish who finished the object, when, how it keeps, and who will stand behind it before you let the square or the house year deepen the sale. Buy what still melts and pours. One glass and one named praline will carry the day. A tin, a miniature, and a story will not.

Ask the same four questions at every counter. Who finished this. When. How it should be kept. Whether the box in your hand came from this shop or from a plant you will not see. If the answers are a crest and a smile, walk on.

The glass

At Bicerin - Caffè al Bicerin, Piazza della Consolata 5, buy the house drink before you buy a box. The method is layers: espresso, drinking chocolate, cream. Do not stir unless you are told to. Ask whether the chocolate in the glass is the same chocolate in the tin, and which of the two was made to travel. One glass is enough. A stack of gianduiotti is a second decision, not a default. The official page still prints the 1763 room and the Wednesday close. Confirm before you walk. If the door is shut, do not take a branded cup on Via Roma as a substitute.

At Baratti & Milano, Piazza Castello 27, choose one named format. Cremino or gianduiotto. Ask whether the box was filled for this café or sent from the Bra plant at Via Don Orione 119/C. Sit down if the room is the reason you came. Standing for a large latta because the gallery is gilded is how you go home with a tin, not a chocolate. The Caramella Classica is a named house sweet. It is still not a reason to skip the cremino. Do not go to Bra today.

The praline

At Guido Gobino, Via Lagrange 1/A, name the object. Tourinot, Cremino al Sale, a gianduja sheet. Ask which of those is on the counter today, whether it came from Via Cagliari 15/b, and how many days the box should be kept cool. A piece packed this morning is the purchase. A warm window piece is lunch. The factory shop on Cagliari is closed Saturday and Sunday on the official botteghe page. Confirm. The Platti counter at Corso Vittorio Emanuele II 72 is a third official door, not a second bag. If you already bought a cremino at Baratti, buy a different shape here or buy nothing.

At Stratta, Piazza San Carlo 191, buy one format you can finish: candied violets, a small giandujotto box, fruit gelée. Ask which is made for the shop and which is packed for catering. The chandelier is not a product. Official contacts also list Lungo Dora Colletta 113/10. That is the office, not the square. The pin is the piazza, not a faked doorway.

At Domori, Piazza San Carlo 177, buy a named bar at a stated cacao percentage. Chuao, Porcelana, or whatever is actually in the case. Ask where that batch was conched. The factory remains Via Pinerolo 72-74, None. The register said no Turin walk-in. The official stores page now names 177. Use 177. Do not ride to None for a gift set. One bar from this case plus one format from Gobino is already a lot to keep cool.

At Venchi, Via Accademia delle Scienze 3, remember what you are in. The live legal pin is Via Vincenzo Monti 8, Milan. Production is Castelletto Stura. This is a chain door that happens to sit near the Egyptian Museum. Gianduiotti if you buy. Gelato if you are already hot. It is not a reason to skip Gobino. If the other chocolate doors are open, you can pass this one.

Coffee as beans, not as a museum

Caffè Vergnano still roasts from Santena, S.S. Torino-Asti km 20. Describe the brew you actually use. Moka, espresso, a machine at home. Buy a bag that matches the equipment. A branded cup on a chain stool is not the house. Do not pick a random Turin café from a directory and call it Vergnano's door.

Lavazza keeps Nuvola at Via Bologna 32. Museum, HQ, a store at the end of the visit. The ORBIS official link is the Milan flagship. Do not treat Aurora-district headquarters as a centro café. If you came for beans, say the blend. If you came for the museum, buy the ticket first. Fagnola sitting opposite a historic Caffè Lavazza on San Tommaso does not make that café this row's door.

Paper and cloth

At Bottega Fagnola, Via San Tommaso 11/E, ask whether the notebook is sewn here and what the paper weight is. A spine you can open flat is a tool. A stamped cover that says Torino is a souvenir. Restoration estimates belong at Via Orvieto 19, with the binders, not at the shop counter on a Saturday. Official shop hours have run Tuesday afternoon through Saturday. Confirm. One notebook.

At MaFelicita, Via delle Orfane 16, courtyard, write first. Official lab page: appointment. Ask which deadstock cloth is on the table and whether Cucito per Te can cut the model you want. If no one can name the mill, you do not yet have a dress. No appointment, no visit.

At Maison Guida, Piazza Vittorio Veneto 14, ask cloth (Biella wool, Italian linen), make, and whether the house will repair the coat. Official contact says the piece is made in the atelier. "Genderless" is a cut, not a caption. Confirm hours. One piece.

The houses without a centro counter

Aurora is Strada Abbadia di Stura 200. Name the nib (88, Optima) and whether you are buying a current model or a limited edition. Book the factory if you want to see the grind. Do not invent a pen shop on Via Roma.

Pastiglie Leone is Via Italia 46, Collegno. A small tin of a named flavour is a sweet. A large vintage-look tin is the object the city will upsell you. Ask which mould and which flavour. Do not buy it as proof of Turin.

Turin Vermouth (TUVE) will sell you Drapò at Piazza CLN 228 or at the plant on Strada del Cascinotto 130. If you already have the glass and the praline, a bottle can be extra. If the bottle is the plan, you have the day backwards. The shop may want a call. Confirm.

Leave Eataly as a destination. Via Fenoglietti 14 is a market roof. Leave K-Way on Via Roma, Kappa, Superga and Goldenwave unless you need clothes. Leave Persol at Corso Torino 7, Lauriano: factory, no door, no official boutique. Leave Repossi for Place Vendôme. Leave Il Marchesato in Saluzzo. Leave Bogue in Brescia.

The inspection is always the same. Can they name the object, the finishing place, and the day it should be eaten or worn. If they can, buy it. If they offer you a crest instead, walk on. The longer argument is on the Turin pillar. The streets are on the route.
