Great Eastern Cutlery

Great Eastern Cutlery was founded in 2006 in Titusville, Pennsylvania, a town with its own 19th-century cutlery history, and builds traditional slip-joint pocket knives under four house brands: GEC Cutlery, Tidioute Cutlery, Northfield UN-X-LD, and Farm & Field Tool. The company states that each knife passes through roughly 200 hand operations before it leaves the factory, a figure it uses to explain why runs of any single pattern are kept small and irregular rather than mass-produced on demand.

The factory at 701 East Spring Street is a working plant with an attached retail store, and the company runs public tours that end on the shop floor where visitors can buy directly from current stock. Because patterns are released in limited, non-repeating runs, the secondary market for out-of-production Great Eastern knives is active enough that certain patterns trade well above original retail — a collector dynamic the company itself did not create but has come to define its releases.

Great Eastern's position in American cutlery is unusual for a company less than twenty years old: it makes old-pattern American slip-joints — jack knives, trappers, sowbellies — using construction methods (bolstered bone and stag handles, nickel-silver bolsters, carbon and stainless blade steels) associated with 19th- and early 20th-century cutlery houses, rather than reinterpreting them. It is, functionally, a modern factory revival of a regional trade that had largely disappeared from Titusville before the company opened.
