Knife Gallery (JW Han)

Knife Gallery is a working bladesmith's showroom in Seoul's Insadong district, run by knifemaker JW Han and described by South Korea's official tourism organization, Visit Korea, as the country's sole knife-specialty museum. Visit Korea's own listing places it at 7 Insadong 9-gil, Jongno-gu, with a collection exceeding 6,000 knives spanning traditional Korean and Japanese blades, Chinese cutlery, and film-prop pieces, alongside functional knives for sale, and confirms current operating hours (weekdays 9:30 a.m.–7 p.m., reduced weekend hours, closed Seollal and Chuseok).

Unlike a pure retail gallery, Han is himself both a swordsmith and kitchen-knife maker who forges blades from raw steel, including Damascus-pattern steel, on-site; independent visitor accounts (Tripadvisor, BladeForums) describe customers commissioning custom knives and being able to observe the forging process directly — a genuinely working smithy rather than a curated antiques shop.

Given the Korean peninsula's comparatively thin roster of currently operating, publicly documented independent bladesmiths relative to Japan's Sakai and Seki forging towns, Han's gallery-workshop is presented here on the strength of its government-tourism-board corroboration and direct visitor accounts of live forging, rather than as evidence of a broader Korean cutlery-town cluster — none was found to exist at comparable scale.
