Kobayashi Shikki

Kobayashi Shikki manufactures and sells Tsugaru-nuri, the multi-layered lacquerware tradition unique to the Hirosaki area of Aomori Prefecture, from its own workshop and retail premises at Higashijokita in Hirosaki City. The company describes handling manufacturing, sales, and wholesale in-house, and lists itself among the retailers recognized by the Aomori Lacquerware Federation (Tsugaru Nuri Kumiai), the industry body that maintains the official register of practicing Tsugaru-nuri makers.

Tsugaru-nuri is built on a labor-intensive polishing process — dozens of lacquer layers are built up and then ground back to expose a mottled, marbled pattern — and Kobayashi Shikki's catalog spans the tradition's named finishes, including karanuri, monsha-nuri, and nanako-nuri, applied to chopsticks, soup bowls, sake cups, trays, and tea implements as well as smaller accessory items such as smartphone cases. The shop states it holds new product development meetings every three months to keep pace with contemporary uses for the technique, and separately offers name engraving and lacquerware restoration, positioning items as repairable heirlooms rather than disposable goods.

Tsugaru-nuri is a genuinely distinct craft lineage from the Wajima and Kiso-Hirasawa lacquerware already well represented in the registry, and until now had no dedicated presence in it. Kobayashi Shikki is a working, in-house maker rather than a marketplace aggregator, with a fixed Hirosaki address and federation-recognized standing, which is the kind of primary-source grounding the category calls for.
