KT&G Sangsangmadang Hongdae

KT&G Sangsangmadang Hongdae opened in 2007 as the first of the organisation's five Korean cultural spaces. KT&G defines Sangsangmadang as a multidisciplinary arts venue that supports emerging artists and gives the public access to cultural programmes. The network also operates in Nonsan and Chuncheon, with additional sites in Daechi and Busan. Across the network, more than 3,000 artistic and cultural programmes are presented each year. Design Square gives the Hongdae venue a retail-facing component. The current venue guide places this design market across the first two floors and describes it as a living-and-gift store presenting Korean and international design. The wider building contains seven floors above ground and four below. It accommodates design and exhibitions, with education beside cinema and performance spaces. KT&G also records lifts and accessible toilets at Hongdae. Printed material includes braille, while videos use sign language or subtitles. Its Over the Rainbow exhibition has supported disabled artists since 2018. The result is a cultural complex where merchandise and exhibitions operate alongside artist programmes within one institutional structure.
