Midaya Ceramics

Midaya Ceramics has worked from Pannipitiya, on the edge of Colombo, since 1968, and the company remains wholly family owned and operated. It describes itself as a design studio and factory rather than a shop that serves designers as well as manufacturers in several countries. A client's sketch is taken through sculpting and sample moulds to finished glazed pieces. The site holds an in-house crushing plant, a slip house and a mould making department. Its own laboratory produces fritted and raw glazes as well as engobes and colour stains. Few workshops in South East Asia fire several ceramic bodies at once, and Midaya runs earthenware and stoneware side by side with terracotta and porcelain, along with colour-stained bodies. Most pieces are decorated by hand, so no two come out identical. The catalogue is organised by use. Tableware together with kitchenware forms the largest section of the range. Home decor and ornaments follow, together with bath and spa accessories. Heritage and religious pieces have their own sections, and a horeca line serves hotels and restaurants with durable pieces. Midaya works with designers and manufacturers abroad, and ranges are sampled and packaged for shipment to the client's door. The factory address is Shanthi Mawatha in Pannipitiya.
