Scheer has made shoes in Vienna since 1816, seven generations of the same family, and served as k.u.k. Hoflieferant — purveyor to the imperial and royal court — bootmaker to emperors whose lasts the house still keeps in its archive. The Bräunerstraße atelier, steps from the Hofburg, works exclusively bespoke: no ready-to-wear line, no seconds. A first pair proceeds through measurement, a hand-carved personal last, trial fittings, and construction entirely by hand — welted, finished, and polished in the Viennese manner, quieter and more austere than English or Italian schools. The house keeps clients' lasts permanently, so subsequent pairs need no new fitting; families have measured generations here. The museum-like salon displays imperial lasts and historic pairs. This is shoemaking as it existed before industry: one of the last places in Europe where the entire craft survives under one family's name.
