Frank Smythson opened his stationery shop on Bond Street in 1887 and gave the world a specific luxury: the featherweight blue-paged diary, portable enough for a pocket, bound in leather — the template for a century of English stationery elegance. The house's pale 'Nile blue' paper, watermarked and cross-grained, remains its signature, wrapped in Panama-grain lambskin notebooks stamped in gold. Royal warrants accumulated across reigns, and the client book runs from Churchill to Grace Kelly. Smythson's engraved correspondence cards and bespoke stationery service continue the old trade, while the leather goods — travel wallets, jewelry rolls, the Mara collections — extend it. The Faubourg Saint-Honoré presence carries the Bond Street house to Paris. The Panama notebook in Nile blue is the essential object: gilt-edged, feather-light, and unchanged in spirit since the founder designed its ancestor.
