Kobo Ainoyakata

Kobo Ainoyakata is a traditional indigo dyeing workshop and shop in Ohara, a rural district of Kyoto's Sakyo Ward roughly thirty minutes from the city center. The workshop dyes using the tenneen-aku hakko-date method — natural ash-lye fermentation — a technique established during the Edo period, and works exclusively with Awa indigo grown and fermented in Tokushima, using methods the workshop describes as refined over more than 600 years.

The ash-lye fermentation converts sukumo, concentrated fermented indigo leaf, into a dye bath that can be maintained and redipped across Japan's full seasonal cycle, rather than requiring a fresh vat for each dyeing run. The workshop sells finished indigo textiles and goods through its own online store and hosts hands-on dyeing sessions for visitors by advance booking, out of its studio at 276 Oohnagase-cho in Ohara.

The workshop describes its purpose as preserving "the beautiful Japanese blue" for future generations, a framing that positions it as much a custodian of technique as a retailer, and it treats the ash-lye process itself — not any single finished garment — as the thing being handed down.
