Helle Knives

Helle was founded in 1932 in Holmedal, on Norway's western coast, by brothers Steinar and Sigmund Helle, sons of the village blacksmith. Steinar had recently returned to Norway from the United States, and Sigmund had trained in metallurgy under their father; together they began making knives when other work grew scarce, and the company's own account describes Steinar packing a rucksack of finished knives and cycling over mountain passes to sell them in Oslo when the local market was exhausted, getting the equivalent of a few cents per knife on that first selling trip.

For Helle's first fifteen years the workshop made only simple sheath knives before adding table knives in 1948 and later forks and spoons. The founders built stone water channels on the mountainside above Holmedal to harness the local river for the forge's power, an engineering solution the company credits as much as the smithing itself for keeping the workshop running through its early decades. Production has stayed in that same village through three generations of the family — grandsons Svein-Erik Helle and Jan Steffen Helle now run the company, which the firm says still emphasizes hand-work and quality materials over relocating or outsourcing, and still frames the business around the idea that knives should be made by people who like the work.

Helle is Norway's clearest example of a still-family-run, still-village-based sheath-knife maker in the Scandinavian bushcraft and outdoor tradition — a lineage distinct from Finland's Marttiini, already carried in the registry, and worth stocking for that reason.
