Khayamiya (Tentmakers)

Located behind Bab Zuwayla on Cairo's last covered medieval street, this tentmakers' workshop produces khayamiya appliqué, hand-stitched cloth panels and wall hangings whose technique reaches back millennia. With only around twenty shops and a few dozen stitchers left on the street, its master craftsmen sew every piece by hand.
